Lumenis Aluma Skin Renewal System

Aluma is a revolutionary new, non-invasive treatment for wrinkles, fine lines and skin laxity.  It results in smoother, tighter, firmer and, therefore, more youthful-looking skin.

Wrinkles are the natural consequence of laughing, frowning, too much time in the sun and the slowing down of collagen production; they can make us both look and feel old.  Aluma treatments deliver energy safely and comfortably to the underlying layers of the skin, gently stimulating the production of new collagen, while protecting the outer layer.  The collagen plumps and smoothes the complexion, making it look younger.

The new and innovative technology used in the Aluma system is known as FACES (Functional Aspiration Controlled Electrothermal Stimulation). Skin is drawn gently into the tip of the hand piece and energy delivered deep into the dermis to create a mild and virtually painless warming.

A typical treatment takes about 15 minutes, after which you can return to normal activities.  A series of treatments is recommended for optimal results and the skin will continue to improve several months following treatment.

ALUMA SKIN RENEWAL FAQS

If you are considering an Aluma treatment, the following information will give you a basic understanding of the procedure. It can't answer all your questions, since a lot depends on the individual patient and the practitioner: please ask the doctor at your consultation about anything you don’t understand

What is Aluma?

Aluma™ is the product of research and development by Lumenis and is technically known as Vacuum Assisted Radio Frequency Treatment.

The Aluma™ Skin Renewal System was introduced to the world in February 2005 at the American Academy of Dermatology conference in the USA.

How does it work?

The signs of ageing on a person's face start to show as early as the end of the second or the beginning of the third decade of a person's life. At first, fine lines start to form between the nose and the mouth, around the eyes and on the forehead. As a result of facial movements that are often repeated, the first expressive wrinkles come into being: laughter creases, brow furrows and crow's feet.

Over the years, the skin loses its elasticity, because it produces fewer and fewer collagen and elastin fibres. This results in the weakening of connective tissue causing the skin to lose its tone. The skin becomes flabby, and wrinkles are formed. Due to gravity, wrinkles develop downwards, a phenomenon seen in sagging cheeks and drooping eyelids.

Skin specialists now believe that most of the changes that we see in our skin as we grow older are due to the sun, (sometimes referred to as "photodamage"). It is well known changes that occur to our skin include a loss of elasticity; wrinkles can start to develop and become deeper; we may notice unevenness in our skin tone and texture with some areas of brown pigmentation (age spots) and fine red thread veins. In addition an underlying loss of fatty tissue can also cause our skin to become loose and sag resulting in a hollowed appearance around the cheek area, and jowls around the chin and jaw and excessive sunbathing, or use of sunbeds can accelerate this process.  RF energy is able to penetrate the skin and affect the deeper dermis and subcutaneous layers, causing tightening and improvements to the underlying tissue structure.

What does it do?

It is designed to treat wrinkles and skin laxity with technology called FACES™ (Functional Aspiration Controlled Electrothermal Stimulation), which uses a vacuum-assisted delivery of radio frequency energy deep into the dermal layer.  This stimulates collagen renewal.

The use of electric currents in medicine has been documented almost since electricity itself was discovered.

Radio frequency has a lengthy history of use in hospitals for oral, ophthalmic, plastic and gynaecological surgery and gradually, its use in the practice of dermatology, cosmetology, cardiology, neurosurgery and ENT procedures gained momentum and popularity. Low frequency alternating currents are also used in physiotherapy for their ability to cause contractions in muscles.

With the introduction of cryogenics it is possible to deliver RF energy to the deep dermis and sub-dermal layers of the skin, whilst protecting the epidermis. Heating in this area, without damaging the outer layers of skin, causes microscopic changes to the tissues and collagen contraction, with subsequent collagen remodelling over the months that pass.
